After 56 years, the Henkel Beauty Care Executive Committee have made the decision to discontinue the Clynol brand from the UK and Ireland market.
Clynol was one of the original wholesale-focussed brands in the UK, targeting freelance and independent hairdressers. With their message of “Shaped by stylists” and compact care, colour and form lines, the brand was instrumental in supporting sole traders and promoting small salon businesses.
The brand was launched in 1924 by hairdresser and educator Friedrich Klein as Kleinol. Friedrich went on to develop a ground-breaking transparent gel – “Gelee” – which allowed the colour process to be observed; and with that, the Viton colour range was born. Kleinol became part of the Schwarzkopf group and was renamed Clynol in 1979, before joining Henkel in 1996.
Clynol was the first company to bring the Cold Wave perm to the UK and in 1972 it launched Mousette; one of the first commercially-available styling mousses. Clynol was not only a pioneer in products, but also in its support and promotion of the hairdressing industry. The Clynol Business and Creative Awards provided an opportunity for independent salons and freelance stylists to compete on a national stage, while the Clynol Makeover Competition provided one lucky salon winner – DJs Hair Salon in Telford – with a £25,000 business remodel.
The Clynol Protégé Team provided support and education for emerging talent, incubating some of the most promising names in British Hairdressing. Amongst those who passed through the scheme are session stylist and Josh Wood team member, Pete Burkill; F.A.M.E. Team alum and salon owner Ryan Harris and multi award-winner, Tim Scott-Wright. Clynol also supported the careers of some of hairdressing’s most dynamic women, with Lisa Shepherd, Tracey Devine and Sharon Peake all serving as brand ambassadors over the years.
Henkel will now be promoting Indola as its alternative wholesale-exclusive brand. “Indola has a very strong heritage in the UK and Ireland Wholesale marketplace,” says Richard Thomasson, head of wholesale for the UK and Ireland. “We believe it has an excellent opportunity to further grow and develop with the exciting pipeline of activities we have planned for 2020 and beyond. This is also in line with the Henkel strategy to focus on developing global brands within the Professional Hair market.”
